My Basketball Journey

By: Develin Khow

I have loved playing basketball since I was a kid. The first time I played basketball was in elementary school and I kept playing in junior and senior high school. For me, basketball was not only a game. It’s also my medicine that can heal me and make me feel better.

I started joining the basketball extracurricular in grade 4. I practiced 3 times a week in the afternoon, and I joined some competitions like Sporta Cup and Budi Cup. My team won 1st and 3rd place in Sporta Cup and 2nd place in Budi cup. The most special moment is when I got selected for Sporta Kal-Bar All Star in grade 6. Every school chose their 3 best players to form a team, so each team got 12 players from 4 different schools.

When I was in grade 7, I was still playing basketball. I joined Paulus Cup, and that was my first time playing with a full girls team. Even though we didn’t win, it was still a fun game and a nice experience for me. After that, Covid came and because of that I stopped playing basketball.

Then in senior high school, honestly I already lost my interest in basketball because of that long break. But during class meeting, I played for my class in 3x3 basketball game. That game made me feel excited again, so I decided to join the extracurricular. At that time, the Tanjung Pura Cup was coming up. Training was so fun, everyone tried to be selected.

The coach was my senior that I used to play with, so he already knew my skill level and I got chosen. But sadly, most of the team were newbies and we only practiced less than one month, so we lost every game in the tournament. After that so many people quit the extracurricular, and I also quit.

That is how my basketball story ended. Not everything was about winning, but the journey from elementary school until senior high school gave me a lot of good memories. Basketball taught me about teamwork and how to keep going even when things didn’t go well.
