How I Benefit From English Movies

After finishing Basic Reading and Writing class, my friends and I decided not to go home right away. Instead, we went to the cinema to watch The Conjuring : Last Rites. The atmosphere in the theater was exciting, with people whispering before the lights went out. Even though it was a horror movie, I really enjoyed the whole experience, especially the jump scares along with the loud noises. It was scary and fun at the same time, kind of like a rollercoaster ride.

I realized that English movies give me many benefits. They allow me to experience the thrill of a good story while I am improving my english skills at the same time. I can listen to how native speakers naturally communicate, pick up new vocabulary, and even noticing slangs or idioms that I don't often see in textbooks. I can also improve my listening ability when I hear the language in different emotions, tones, and speeds.

To achieve these benefits, I use some simple methods. I sometimes take quick notes about new words or phrases, or if I can not write in the cinema, I try to memorize them and write it later. I also turn on subtitles so I can match spoken English with its written form. Another technique I use is shadowing, where I repeat the lines after the characters. It really helps me to practice pronunciation even though it might sound funny.

The reason I do all of this is because it supports my contextual learning. It means I can understand English better when I see it used in real situations, not only in books. It also helps train my memory and keep my brain active, it is like a brainstorming exercise. For me, movies are not just a way to pass the time, they are a powerful tool to improve my English skills and make learning feel easier. [JEN]
