Book Review: Tuesdays with Morrie
Have you ever wondered about people who got illness or disease and don’t have much time left? You might think they will be depressed and give up on everything in their life. But Morrie is different. Tuesdays with Morrie is a memoir by Mitch Albom who visited his professor, Morrie Schwartz, for his last class about the meaning of life and how to love people. Morrie has Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis also known as ALS. Because of this, he didn't have much time left. Even though he didn't have much time left, he still enjoyed his life to the fullest with his family, people who are close with him, and with his student (Mitch). Mitch must attend his last class with Morrie every Tuesday in Morrie’s home. Mitch was his former student in Brandeis University. After many years, he visited Morrie after hearing news about Morrie’s disease. So, this book will tell you about their last class and what they learned.

Why should you read this book? If you feel rushed right now and are overwhelmed by many things like career, education, or work life, you should read this. With Mitch we will learn about forgiveness, love, family, farewell, and death from Morrie. When I read this book, I felt like talking to strangers, especially elderly people, and they give wise advice when you need it. As a result, it will make your heart warm and make you feel relieved from your burdens. There are quotes that stuck with me until now, “Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live." and “It’s more than the negative that you’re going to die, it’s also the positive that you understand you’re going to die, and that you live a better life because of it.” This book reminds us to slow down and enjoy our life while we are still in this world. Most of us keep rushing because we want better, better, and better for the sake of our life, right? All we know is how to live and how to survive. But once you learn that in the end you are going to die, you will start trying to find how to enjoy your life and slow down for your own happiness. You might ask, “how to live our life to the fullest?” Based on Morrie, we need to love other people including ourselves and forgive ourselves. When you understand and apply it in your life, at the end of your life, you can leave this world peacefully because you already live your life to the fullest and don’t have many regrets. Therefore, if you are in a burned out phase or overthinking about the future, this book might help you!
“Tuesdays with Morrie” is also recommended for beginners who want to start reading English books. Most of the vocabulary in this book is easy to understand and this book only has 224 pages (Penguin Random House). However, there are some poems in this book that probably are quite hard to understand. It took me a few minutes to understand and re-read it again and again in the poem parts. So, it might make some readers confused when they read it. But once you understand the poems, it will make the book more beautiful.
Therefore, "Tuesdays with Morrie” is worth reading because it has many lessons about life that might help us in our daily life. Also, this book is easy to read and you can read it in one sitting. I recommend this book if you want a light book to read. (Je)
