A Pinch of Love: Why I Adore My Mom’s Cooking

By: Earlene Yocelyn

Everyone probably has different reasons when asked who their favourite cook is. For me, the answer is my mother. Not because her cooking is fancy but because there's magic in every dish, a magic I cannot find anywhere else. Since I was a child my mom's cooking has been a symbol of endless love.

I've always admired everything she makes. Beyond the delicious flavour, there’s a deeper meaning behind every plate. A quiet story of handwork, patience and unconditional care. It's not something she says out loud but you can feel it in every bite. Her cooking always carries a sense of warmth and comfort.

All of my mom's cooking is the best. But there are some that have my heart. I actually am not a big fan of chicken but I gotta say I love my mom's lemongrass chicken. The combination of lemongrass and other seasonings is very integrated. It produces an aroma that enhances the appetite.

Siomay also is my comfort food. It is made from a mix of fish and shrimp, it carries a perfect balance of flavour and comfort that no restaurant can match. Of course, siomay without peanut sauce is not complete. My mom’s sauce is thick and savoury. It blends perfectly with the siomay, making every bite special.

I truly admire my mom’s cooking because they are made with love, care, and special flavour that I can never find anywhere else. Her cooking is not only delicious but also reminds me of the effort and dedication she puts into making us feel loved and cared. That is why her food will always be my favourite and something I deeply admire.
